Normal for the Midwest

Personal Work, 2016

This large scale watercolor piece was inspired by the chaos and destruction that a tornado creates. When I started painting this, I worked with an under layer with shades of Ultramarine Blues. Once I had the base layer with all the values and outlines, I went back in with hues of green, brown and yellows. I wanted the piece to feel uneasy as you were looking into it. Once I finished the layers upon layers of paint, I added some splatter to the edge of the tornado to look like debris was flying around. Tornadoes have always fascinated me. It’s a great and terrible beauty that mother nature creates.
